Director, Graphic Arts
Anne Gutmann grew up exploring the Adirondack Mountains of Northern New York where she developed an appreciation for the natural beauty of her surroundings and an interest in the way the world works.
As an undergraduate, Anne first enrolled as an art major but soon switched to studying physics and materials science after a group of her fellow students decided to throw lunch trays off a bell tower as part of an art project. Anne thought this was wasteful and not at all artistic but thought it would, however, be fun to learn about the laws that governed the tray’s trajectory and fracture mechanics.
Happily, after completing a master’s degree in biomechanics at Cornell, Anne discovered the University of California Santa Cruz science illustration program. The science illustration program emphasized the importance of both aesthetic beauty and scientific accuracy. Hard work and attention to detail were rewarded. No one threw lunch trays.
Anne is an experienced illustrator and designer for both print and web applications. She specializes in translating complex scientific concepts into understandable and attractive graphics.
